Ladies and Gentlemen, the Master List Hyundai Super Comboy 슈퍼 컴 보이 !

Games

As you can see on the Master List, I identified so far 34 outputs Hyundai / Official Cost, 1 bootleg et 1 accessoire officiel. I'm sure this is the entire catalog of Super Comboy, but it may be that certain securities or box variations remain to be discovered, the image of the first edition of Super Mario Kart blue box with no picture has yet been found to this day (but its existence is very likely). There are also Japanese imports, some incluants a leaflet fold black & white written in Korean (Romancing Sa-Ga 2)… difficult to know the exact number, especially as most seem beings RPG with lots of Japanese text (other genres like fighting games were rather imported from USA). We can scarcely consider these games as a part of the official catalog (unlike NBA JAM T.E. which was the subject of a refurbishment by Hyundai from a Japanese version). La liste n’est donc pas exhaustive.

I counted 4 different revisions of the console and 2 revisions to the controller :

1) Console with buttons in English, ON / OFF the LED POWER an embossed one en anglais (100% English)

2) Console with buttons hangul, ON/OFF and LED POWER en relief et en coréen (100% hangul)

3) Console with buttons and LED POWER in Hangul, but ON / OFF relief and English (mix)

4) Console with buttons hangul, ON / OFF the LED POWER an embossed one en anglais, but also printed on the side in Hangul. (Mix)

Once again, the list of hardware revisions is not exhaustive, this is just the most visible differences and it is perfectly possible that differences can also be found at the motherboards, look at this example :

Here, we see different forms of power, one being AC (AC), the other DC (direct current) = il existerait donc bien différentes carte-mères.

As you can see on the Master List, I’ve counted 34 official Hyundai/Cost releases, 1 bootleg release and 1 official accessory so far. But there might be more, for exemple some variations still need to be accounted for as no real box pictures have been seen for them up to this day like the Super Mario Kart blue box. Also it seems that a lot of games were imported straight from japan, some carrying a very simple black & white instruction sheet in Korean (Romancing Sa-Ga 2)… hard to say how many of these are around in South Korea, besides it looks as if most of these were RPGs with a heavy load of japanese text. One can hardly consider them as real Super Comboy release (NBA JAM unlinke T.E. who was at least repacked by Hyundai).

Hardware Revisions

I’ve counted 4 different console revisions and 2 Joypad revisions :

1) Console with English Buttons names, ON/OFF and POWER LED Embossed in English on the front plates (100% English)

2) Console with Hangul Buttons names, ON/OFF and POWER LED Embossed in Hangul on the front plates (100% Hangul)

3) Console with Hangul Buttons names and embossed POWER LED, but ON/OFF is embossed in English on the dark grey font plate (mixed)

4) Console with Hangul Buttons names, ON/OFF and POWER LED Embossed in English on the front plates but also printed in Hangul on the side. (Mixed)

Again there might be more, these are just the obvious hardware revisions but I belive some motherboard were also different, check out this exemple :

Different Power plug, some are AC other are DC = means different revisions of the motherboard (I also believe some might have the plug-in sound board and some just the soundchip, I haven’t checked yet, but the one I’ve modified myself with stereo output had the sound board inside).

Regarding the Joypad (SNSN-005 AGE), only 2 known variations :
1) Start + Select buttons in English
2) Start + Select buttons in Hangul

As you can see on the picture above, bios console is different and specific to China. For the moment only Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land are available and pre-installed on the console at the time of purchase. Difficult to know if the games will be zoned cartridges like the rest of the world or if they are Region-Free (and yes, on 3DS, those are the games that are not zoned and consoles contrary to what one might think). However it seems qu'iQue favors format for download via the eShop titles to come to China, The latter must necessarily pass through more translation box to be sold. The future will tell us what it is so, although anyway the main attraction of these versions iQue comes from their design and the difficulty in obtaining in our country (and therefore, it is above all consoles collection).

Finally, Although the game is not stamped “iQue”, play The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D in its Taiwanese, is compatible with Chinese iQue consoles. This is the only game that is consistent with Taiwanese with both its home region and another region. According to the game console is also in Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau) or simplified (Mainland China).

Indeed, Further cosmetic changes such as replacing buttons, screen protection and custom paint job on the hull Posca or airbrush, there are many hardware changes to the first small portable Nintendo called “DMG” in the jargon (with reference to the serial number of this model).

Although musician in my spare time, I am first and foremost a player, That is why installing a backlight on a classic Game Boy I was immediately interested and I ordered a few kits as soon as I discovered their existence (especially the GB Light does not run the streets).
After two attempts unsuccessful personal, I finally have my Game Boy classic backlit ! This would never have happened without the help of a friend @ Retroblogueur (see his blog) to whom I sent a console and kits in www.nonelectronics.com I bought in early, so that makes it even raises the latter due to the success of his first experience. The installation of this kit includes a step rather delicate task to remove a film bonded to the back of the LCD screen to replace it with a polarizing filter. This is only twice I missed (2 screens GB good for the trash…) and friend Retroblogueur did a superb job : a big thank you to you !

It is time to end this post with two family photos :

EDF 3 was distributed in the West, and more particularly in France under the name "Land Defense Force From 2017". The game had no success and soon found himself sold off the supermarket shelves (here paid 5 €)

In normal temps, I'm not a big fan of reproductions, but these three titles are exceptions because they fall into one of the following categories :

- Portage came from another system : interest for the technical challenge, new gameplay (portable <-> living as GG Shinobi).

- Become too expensive for the average player, difficile à trouver.

- Translated titles (former : these games MD), unreleased ou en phase Beta qui autrement seraient perdu ou resteraient injouables.

- For games on CD : Pressed CD, not burned (important for the preservation of the medium and laser lens of our consoles).

Space Fantasy Zone

Space Fantasy Zone, a mix between Space Harrier and… Fantasy Zone, of course !
This title created by Nec Avenue in fact many appearances in Japanese magazines of the time but is ultimately never released, apparently for reasons of license (Sega would have vetoed the concept).
At the end of year 90, “someone” to put their hands on a Beta and distributed. A first series of reproductions of low quality has emerged in the wake (burned to CD-R, audio problems…) some of which are sold up 60.000Y on YJA ! (each his own…). This new repro rule is now perfect because all the problems mentioned above and is provided with a spin, a notice, a poster and a reg card. Quand au CD, it is a pressed CD and screened and not a vulgar CD-R. La qualité de finition de l’ensemble est vraiment excellente.

Rockman / Megaman

Render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar, merit of this port to ECP Nes returns to the blog author pcedev.wordpress.com who also works on other ports (Castlevania, Super Mario Bros, Ducktales 2 etc.…). His work is impressive and discovers that our little processor PC-Engine is backwards compatible with that of the NES !

Toutefois l’auteur de la repro à vraiment soigné le travail en créant ici une jaquette et un poster du plus bel effet.

Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire

Those like me who have recently heard about the case in Japan Metal Slug AES, seront coutumier du fait qu’it is now almost impossible to buy a Sapphire original Internet because of too many reproductions sold at a high price (and because of ignorance or lack of scruples of certain sellers).

Can not find it less than 300 € and impossible to ascertain whether an original… The only way to get it is to have a certified original hands before going to buy another shop directly comparing. In short it is very complicated, risky and expensive and that is why I succumbed to the reproduction to be able to play with my Duo and finally heat the damn Arcade Card still sealed !

I am aware that approach is ambiguous, Moreover, it is some debate on forums, because by purchasing this reproduction I participate indirectly general chaos that surrounds this game. But to be honest, I'm a player and foremost to € 300 in original, risk pay full price reproduction, or simply the PSP version is unthinkable in my eyes ! Where the purchase of this version “Robin Hood“.

Anyway ...

As you can see, the overall quality of the reproductions is very good, pushing up retail blister reproduce, spin, reg card, notice, silkscreen poster and CD. The work is quality, but the price is a bit high for the reproduction on CD (count between 35 and 40in / game). However, the author of these repros provided for each of them an additional disk in order to keep its loose copies blister or simply to share the games with his friends. Une attention plutôt sympathique.

In the same kind, did you know ?

• A Taiwan, La Master System, or rather the Mark III and the Sega SG-1000 games and were officially distributed by the company specializes in electronic Aaronix (Alor)

• In Singapore and Malaysia, the Megadrive, the Gamegear and Saturn were officially distributed by the Group Wywy founded in 1976 by Dr.. Yip Yan Wong. A graduate of Harvard had already recorded 76 companies 1995 ! It is not to be confused with Dr.. Wei Yen, founder of the brand Nintendo iQue China. Consoles were zoned PAL 50hz. The group would have had storefront shops and have participated in the installation of E-zone Sega (game-centers) Indonesia. In 1997, Yip Yan Wong ouvre 3 theme park indoors with Sega Enterprise Inc.. (with themes of virtual reality and interactive attractions)…

• En Thailande, The Megadrive was distributed by a company called Galaxy. Founded by the torque M. Amorn et Mme Puangpetch Apithanakoon (whew !), This company started its activity in restoring 1970 to 1990 ! In 1985, the company is flourishing then ventured into the business of video game through M. Amorn and became the first company distributing and exclusive Enterprise Sega Thai market. On the twenty arcade game of the same 86, the company moved to a park 5 centers and over 5000 machines today. Megadrive games were versions Asia (packaging occidental) and consoles in PAL 50hz turned (packaging and format console Japan / Asia).

• En Inde, the Megadrive was also officially released, through the company Shaw Wallace, an old house dating from 1886 specializing in the sale of spirits… The console was manufactured directly from Bombay 1994 (to avoid 80% taxes on import) and was sold in the spring 1995 at a price of 18.000 rupees (or 250 € !), certainly not within the reach of all Indian stock exchanges. Once again, elle tournait en PAL 50hz et les jeux étaient des versions Asia.

• South Korea, Samsung before, games console and SG-1000 and Mark III were distributed by the company Korea Oacs Co. Ltd.. There is the logo on OACS cartridges and consoles like the one in my possession below (cartridge console unfortunately not).

• In golf and the Middle East, more precisely in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Sega products, whose Megadrive, were distributed officially 1992 to 1999 by the company M. Omar Kassem Alesayi, Alesayi United Company conglomerate business (Alesayi Group). This company has also distributed products SNK, you know like the NAM-1975 Neo Geo to the jacket censored :
The brand At Almiah also distributed MSX different forms in Saudi Arabia, with numerous games and software in cartridge format. Three of the MSX computers, the AX330, AX660 and AX990 also had a port Megadrive cartridge !

Sega consoles were (and are still) very popular in Latin America, mainly in Brazil and Argentina. In addition to Tiger Electronic games, Tec Toy the company that is officially distributed throughout the range of Sega in Brazil (the Master System to the Dreamcast). When Nintendo products, they were distributed by the company Playtronic. These consoles, variation and the games that go with, are sought after by some collectors as well as in their own country in Europe or the USA. As Korea, some games are exclusive to this market and the packaging were located (see for example Monica's Gang in this entry).

Only all these versions are very difficult to find outside of Brazil and neighboring countries as : 1) these countries often have “ebay” indoors international, 2) China has poured and continues to pour much Pirates 3) the South Americans were even less careful than Europeans… So it's rare and it can be expensive if you are not patient. To tell you : it is well 2 years that I search this Quackshot and Sonic The Hedgehog… (I still have not found).

Ah ! quickly to finish, it seems that Sega has sold Tec Toy games in… Greece! mais j’y reviendrais lors d’un autre billet.

The first Shinobi that I will present is nothing but a Hack GG Shinobi au format Master System.
This hack a game came from the Gamegear, part of a short list of titles have been literally carried on the console Sega 8bit Lounge (others are : Hook, NBA Jam, GG Aleste 2, Pacman, Rygar, Sonic Drift Racing, Sonic Triple Trouble et Woody Pop). Palette downgraded, hack you bouton start, fix bugs related to different screen resolution… on est loin de la simple conversion.
In the end I'm really happy to find this excellent GG Shinobi on my TV, because admittedly the Gamegear console is aging rather badly. Notez que la jaquette provient de GG Shinobi II qui j’espère sera un jour porté sur SMS de la même façon.

Then it is 2 Korean small acquisitions in recent months : Shinobi et The Super Shinobi en version Samsung !
